Analysis of a star and Dyers star theory - Miss Miller

Many artists within the music industry reinvent themselves frequently for many reasons, these reasons may include:
  • Reaching to a different/wider target audience
  • Creating publicity for themselves
  • Improving their image due to bad previous press
  • Increase revenue
  • Change their genre of music
  • To keep up with era/trends within the music industry
Britney Spears may have wanted to reinvent herself because of her very innocent image, as she started her music career at a very young age and had developed a very pure and immature reputation. Therefore as she grew older, she decided to reinvent herself so that she could reach out to different audiences as well as change with the current trends to maintain her existing fan base.

Within 'Baby one more time' there are many points covered that are stated within Goodwin's theory, as throughout the video there are many pop conventions showed specifically through the dance routines that take place. Dance routines are a major reflection of the pop genre as the music is upbeat and catchy it encourages the audience to participate in the dancing. Britney partakes within all the group dances, for example within the school building with other school girl characters. This represents her as innocent considering that the video is taking place within a school environment, which is associated with young individuals, therefore allowing her to reach out to a younger audience specifically females.

Within the 'Baby One More Time' there is many close ups used, this is typically a demand from the record label to show the audience the identity of the artist so that they can be familiarised with her in the future. Within this video Britney has her closeups during her singing scenes, which allows the audience to associate the music/song directly with the artist. Through the closeups the artist is represented as ordinary as her makeup is very discrete and costume is simple. This therefore makes her relatable and attracts a younger audience particularly females. The music video is all performance based, as Britney is either singing or dancing in view of the camera which allows the audience to view her talents as a music artist.

Dyers Theory
  • Britney started out as a young, innocent artist who was relatable to the audience as she had ordinary values when she started her music career.
  • Within the music video, Britney is simultaneously ordinary for the consumers as she is in a natural setting of a school, which all members of the audience can relate to. Having her ordinary for the audience allows her to connect with them and encourages them to feel apart of her journey through her innocence. However due to the time period that the song was released, Britney is also represented as simultaneously extraordinary, this is because of the small portion of young music artists actually becoming successful, being of such a young age and entering the music industry makes Britney seem exceptional.
  • Hegemony is present within the music video, as Britney is represented as pure and innocent, which is a way in which the consumers will also wish to be perceived as, therefore she is influencing the social values to the mainstream.

Within 'Piece Of Me' there is a voyeuristic treatment of the female body, as Britney dances in an explicit way. She also wears minimal clothing, leaving her body exposed to the audience to attract males attention and also attract females who will envy the artist due to her desirable appearance. The sexualised image being portrayed is also conveyed through the facial expressions made by the artist as she looks directly into the camera with squinted eyes.

The majority of the music video is concept based, however there is aspects of both narrative and performance as well. The concept of the music video is that being famous can be difficult with your personal life being available for everyone to read about. This encourages a relationship to be made between the artist and audience as it allows them to have an insight into the life Britney lives, and what she has to deal with from the paparazzi. The performance that took place was through the artists singing and dancing, this also attracts the audience as it shows them what the she is capable as an music artist.

Dyers Theory

  • Within this Britney Spears music video, Britney has changed her appearance to attract and seem more socially desirable to a more mature audience and she has done this by using a concept theme which this target audience would be interested in. She also used promiscuous footage including the dancing and outfits of both herself and the other characters, this makes it more suitable towards a different and wider audience, which is most likely to be a result of change in trends.
  • The artist is represented as simultaneously extraordinary as the video shows her to live a life that ordinary people do not experience, it shows her to be in the public eye and extremely famous, which is not normal for the majority of all individuals.
  • Hegemony is not present as the video is more likely to discourage any influential behaviour of the artist as it represents a negative lifestyle.

Within the video there is a lot of voyeuristic treatment to the female body as Britney appears naked throughout many of scenes. This is used to appeal to the male audience as they are attracted to this kind of footage, however it also appeals to the female audience as they become fascinated by her body and aspire to look like and be her. The use of nudity within the video is most likely to be a result of the change in trends taken place in the music industry as diversity is becoming more and more popular.

The music video is primarily narrative based, as Britney plays a character who is punishing her boyfriend for being a womanizer. Using a narrative concept helps build a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, which is effective as it encourages the audience to remember the music video. There is also a performance concept as the artist has many scenes involving singing and group dancing in the office directly into the camera, this is used to showcase her talents and allow the audience to be more intrigued by her.

Dyers Theory
  • Within this music video Britney has increased the amount of promiscuousity within her videos as there are extreme amount of nudity throughout 'Womanizer', this shows how her image has evolved over time to appeal to a new, wider target audience. This is most likely a result of the change in the music industry due to the expansion of genres and demand in portrayal of sexuality.
  • The artist is represented as simultaneously ordinary as the video takes place in a office setting, this makes it easier for her connect to the audience as they can relate to this. The environment is one most people either have or do work in therefore relatable.
  • Hegemony is present within the music video, as Britney is represented as desirable and sexy which is what the consumers also wish to be perceived as, therefore she is influencing the social values of the mainstream.

  1. This is a very basic analysis of Kelis' artist image, as you have only explained briefly how she has changed overtime and you have not related specific points within each video to Dyer's theory or messages and values etc.

    You need to:
    1) Change your artist - Kelis has not changed her image overtime - don't think about the songs, think about the actual image
    2) Apply Dyer's theory to each video throughout the analysis
    3) Talk about who the target audience is for each video and how they have changed over time
    4) Explain the messages and value of each video and how they have changed over time
    5) Use micro-elements to support points made about generic conventions etc.
    6) Analyse video by video rather than point by point as it is unclear what video you are referring to throughout
    7) Include a conclusion stating how this research has helped you understand the importance of an artist's image and helped you decide on your artist and target audience

  2. You have provided a basic analysis of Britney's change in representation over time, applying Dyer's theory to each of the videos and explaining how she has changed and why this may be. You need to use micro-elements to support points made, refer to who the TA for each MV is and explain how they may have changed overtime and why, as well as a conclusion stating how this research has helped you understand the importance of an artist's image and helped you decide on your artist and target audience
