Photo shoot - Miss Miller

We took several pictures of our artist, locations or objects that we came across whilst we were carrying out our filming. The pictures that we took will be used for both our album magazine advert and our digipak, therefore it was important to take variety of different images also using different camera angles so that we had more choice. The digipak includes four images itself therefore we needed a wide range of images so that we did not become repetitive or boring, using different angles also added a professional effect to show that we know the different influences each angle represents.

We took this image because we agreed that using an image within the bath setting represented our artists vulnerability as well as showing her in a voyeuristic manor. As she is naked the male viewers will be enticed as it portrays her as promiscuous, however as not much skin is showing we are keeping a classy theme to it. I believe this is a conventional image to use for the soul genre as the water represents her tears and the bath represents her to be trying to wash away from her past relationship. This setting has also been used in many previous, existing music videos from the soul genre because of gloomy atmosphere it sets within the music video. We intended to use this image in our digipak as we felt it would be effective to use to show, audiences that buy the digipak, a more personal side to the artist. However we did not feel that it had strong enough potential to be used as the cover of the album magazine cover as it may be too controversial seeing as our artist is naked and therefore may be inappropriate for our younger audiences.

We chose to take this image because we believed the flowers represent love and having them on the floor crushed portrays how the love had been destroyed especially from using a high angle, as it conveys how love makes people weak and vulnerable. We intended to use this on our digipak as we feel using this particular image informs the audience of the past experience and emotions the artist has felt, which allows them to connect to her indirectly. I believe this image is conventional to the soul genre as many love related objects are used to emphasise the true meaning of the song and lyrics, flowers are one of these many conventionally used objects. The audience are all aware of the true connotations of the flowers therefore they can most likely relate to having received or given flowers to someone they love.

We chose to take this image as we feel it perfectly represents not only our single but our album, which is called 'A True Reflection' by having the album name being written on a mirror in red lipstick and our artist looking at her own reflection in the mirror. The lipstick used to write the album name was used to give the image a more personal incentive so that the audience can tell how deeply in love she was, the red colour connotes the love and passion our artist had for her previous relationship. Having our artist in the image was used because we felt she could assist the audience into finding the connection the mirror has towards the word 'reflection'. We chose to use this image as our album cover advert as it conveys what each song within it represents, we also feel it was the most conventional to the genre, as it shows creativity and is relatable to the audience.

This image was taken as we believe it is conventional to the genre because the artist is not directly looking into the camera which represents her being wounded and too hurt to show her face, hiding her face from the audience conveys how she is trying to hide her broken heart. Her body language shows how she is leaning on the wall, which connotes that she is looking for support which she no longer has now she is single. We intended to use this image for our album magazine advert as we feel it is a simple yet effective image that represents our artist, we also feel it helps build a relationship with the audience as she looks like an ordinary girl in a very relatable location. The extra background also fits in with our layout for our advert as it gives us space to add in the album title, artist name and single title.

Group storyboards - Miss Georgiou

The purpose of creating a group storyboard is to collaborate ideas between group members so that we can produce a plan step by step of what we will include in each shot that will be as effective as possible. An image is drawn as to what we think our shot will look like as well information such as; the camera angle, duration, iconography, characters, lighting, setting etc. From this we will know how to set up each shot in chronological order, which will be very time efficient for us, we will know what we need to organise for the next scene which hopefully allows us to be ahead of schedule.

We used primary research from the questionnaires we created and received results from, using the statistics we came to the conclusion on many different areas as to how we would create our music video, for example the setting, inspiration, the themes and the presence of the artist/characters. The secondary research that assisted us in planing our music video was from existing music video within the genre we chose which was soul. Using the
information we gained once analysing them we made decisions on technical areas such as; the camera shots, lighting and editing, this was useful as it allows us to think of creative yet conventional ways to attract our target audience.

Within our group we decided to share the responsibility by establishing what each member had the best ability in, Shaun and Lucy are the creative two therefore they was in control of drawing the scenes. This meant that they could express how they felt each scene should look in terms of positioning and costume, which was very useful to us as they came up with innovative ideas as well as including suggestions from the rest of the group. Myself and Sophie were in charge of filling out the details of the technical information as we had very clear ideas of how we would carry out Shaun and Lucy's visions, we decided on the camera angles, order of scenes and most of the mise-en-scene. Having created this story board we can begin filming with confidence because we are aware of how and what we will be filming, this allows us to focus on other aspects of the filming.

Planning digipak - Miss Miller

Digipaks are a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs. The purpose of them is to contain extra information or pictures about the artist to create a personal feel for the audience so that they feel more connected to the artist. Digipaks often contain bonus tracks, which differentiates them from CD's as well that they have more sides including more information, this means that they are a more effective approach to reaching the audience and promoting the artist. I will be creating a digipak, therefore my planning is imperative as it allows me to highlight any needed changes, to make sure that it is directly suitable for my target audience and represents my artist conventionally to their genre.

Within my digipak I have chosen to use a closeup of the artist on the main cover, she will be looking at the camera with a blank expression as this is a conventional image to use in the soul genre as it conveys the mood of the music. There will also be bright colours used, for example bright lipstick and eye makeup, this is because I feel it will emphasise her facial features in which I want the audience to focus on. However this is not a conventional choice of colour because dull colours are normally used to create an emotional vibe, to match the meaning and lyrics of the song, which is normally related to heartbreak. The font of the artists name will be large and quite quirky to match the vibrant, big personality of the artist, it will also be in black to make sure that no attention is lost from the image, however her name will still stand out.

The song list will be wrote in a simple, block font so that it is simple to read and the audience can notice any songs they already know and be attracted to buying it. There is 8 songs on the album and an additional 2 bonus songs added as part of a advantage of the digipak, the bonus tracks will be written in more noticeable font to show their significance of being special. The layout of the track listings will be in the middle of the back page so that the presentation is conventional to a normal CD/Digipak.
The images that will be used will consist of both posed shots of the artist and images of objects/settings that convey the genre of the music the artist produces for example; A black/red rose to either represent the dark/depressing or the love/passion side of the lyrics.

A personal message will be wrote in front of the extra image of the artist who is leaning against the brick wall, this will be done to allow the audience to connect with the artist. Having a personal message including appreciation of her fans support will mean that the fans will be encouraged to carry on following her journey and music. The personal message is an additional piece of information that distinctively distinguishes the differences between digipaks and an ordinary jewel CD case. The image within the background of the personal message is of the artist leaning against a brick wall, this image is used because represents a place that is personal to the artist. The image will also be reflected to represent the name of the album 'A True Relfection'.

The CD itself will be plain with the exception of the artists name on the top right corner, this is so that the audience are not distracted from playing the music, however are further reminded of her name so that she is more likely to be remembered. The colour of the CD will be grey as this colour connotes the dark nature of the songs meanings however is also a subtle colour that is quite light so it does not drain the quirky colour scheme. This helps promote the artist to the audience as it portrays her as simple, which means people can relate to her.

I found planning my digipak useful as it allowed me to evaluate all of my decisions and from this I can decide what elements I wish to change or tweak for example the colours, images or font. I am more aware of what images to include within my digipak as it has allowed me to focus on how I want my artist to be represented and how I can reach my target audience by being conventional to the genre.

Planning editing styles - Miss Georgiou

Using a variety of editing styles within a music video is important because it helps keep the relationship between the visuals and music in time with each other, which is included in Dyers theory. It also keeps the audience more engaged as if no editing styles were used in the music video it would become quite boring as transitions would be very simple, this would make people less likely to continue watching. Within our music video we have decided to use three main editing styles which are; Slow pace, flashback and jump-cut.

We will be using slow pace editing throughout the whole music video as this is the most conventional style for the soul genre, as it matches the speed of the actual music which is stereotypically torpid. This is because of the depressing nature of the songs, soul is a genre which represents emotions and past experiences most of which are melancholy. We will be using the slow paced editing throughout the bathroom and bedroom scene, this is because this is when we show our artist at her most vulnerable and when the verses are playing. The slow editing will represent our artist as very distressed and upset as she is reminiscing on her previous relationship, it reflects all of the emotions she is feeling towards to audience through the elongated time she is on the screen. As the editing it slower, the audience will have more time to focus on her facial expressions and body language to discover how she is really feeling, this builds on the relationship the artist and the audience have.

Flashback editing will be used when we will play the flashbacks of the characters relationship throughout the verses, this allows the audience to be clearly aware that they are previous experiences that have taken place. This is a conventional editing style used within the soul genre as it allows the audience to be aware of the background of the lyrics and what led the artist into creating the song. The flashbacks will be positive memories of the male and female and therefore will change the mood of the audience, which means the editing has to be clear so that the audience do not become confused. A relationship between the artist and audience will be created through them seeing all of the experiences she has shared with her ex, as they become aware of the dynamics of her past they will understand more about her and her heartbreak. The flashbacks will represent the artist as relatable as they show how why she is feeling the emotions she is, because she is upset that someone that made her so happy has disappeared from her life. The audience will be able to relate to her through this, the editing also represents her as ordinary as she is grieving for something she no longer has.

Jump-cuts are a conventional editing style used within almost all genres, they are used for the soul purpose of switching immediately and subtly between the narratives. We are using jump-cuts to move from one setting to another within the storyline, for example when our artist is singing in front of the graffiti wall, we will then switch back to when she is in the bath. The jump-cut aims to avoid the audience from waiting or being confused between the transitions of scenes as well as making them run smoothly and professionally. They allow the artist to be represented how they wish to be. If the jump-cuts are used between her performing then he playing a character they show he to be talented as she is interchangeable through the music video.

Risk assessment - Miss Georigou

A risk assessment is a systematic process of evaluating the potential risks that may be involved in a projected activity or undertaking. It is very important recording what potential risks may take place so that we know how to react to them if they do happen, however most of the potential risks are very unlikely therefore we should not have to worry to much about them. Most of our risks take place within our first location as it is in public place, so we will be extra cautious during filming when there. Hopefully having created this risk assessment our music video will be filmed very time efficiently so that we do not waste time fixing problems in which could have been avoided by preventing them.

Description of hazard
Prevention of hazard
Trailing leads while filming
Use gaffer tape to secure leads, so that we do not trip over to avoid any damage to equipment or injury ourselves.
Dropping the camera during a handheld camera shot
Use strap around your hand so that it does not drop on the floor and damage.
Tripping over the tri-pod
Place it sensibly when not using it, put it down and away or in the corner.
Getting too cold when filming outside
Wear warm clothes and have breaks inside to keep motivation up, to avoid distraction.
Falling over when running
Make sure the area is clear before running, or walk carefully at all times.
Going into the road with cars
Film sensibly and be aware of any incoming cars, look left and right.
Bath water could spill and we could slip
Mop the floor and keep towels on the floor if any signs of water is on the floor.
Filming in a busy, public area with pedestrians
Be aware of our surroundings. Moving out the way for people and filming at less busy times of the day.

Filming schedule - Miss Georgiou

Afilming schedule is a project plan of each day's shooting for a film production. It is normally created and managed by the assistant director. The schedule represent a timeline stating where and when production resources are used, this important when planning to film a music video as it allows us to be organised and time efficient. Having information that informs us when and what we have to film will be very useful as we have limited time to film our music video considering we have two different locations to film at and plenty of footage to record. The more time efficient we are, the more time we have to edit our music video and make it as good as we can, we will also have more time incase we need to re film scenes due to any mistakes or changes we want to make.

Planning magazine advert - Miss Miller

The importance of magazine adverts in relation to promoting an artist's album is very important as it is a huge deciding factor as to whether people will be interested in purchasing the actual album itself. If the advert it eye catching and intriguing then people will be more likely to buy it, however if it is unappealing then they will not bother to take a second glance at the album. I will be creating a magazine advert for my artist and I am planning how I will carry this our because there is a long and effective though process into producing a successful magazine album as it needs to be both conventional to the genre, attract the audiences attention and promote the artist.

Within my plan of our magazine advert I have decided to use an establishing shot for the image of our artist even though this is not the conventional shot to use for the soul genre, typically a close up is used, so that the emotions of the artist can be conveyed to the audience through their facial expressions. However I chose an establishing shot, because I wanted to capture the setting of our music video within the advert, as I believe the setting allows the audience to identify the genre considering the setting we chose is very conventional to the genre as it is a brick wall, this shows how urban and current our artist is.

Within the shot our artist is leaning against a brick, graffiti wall, her body language shows how she is confident and edgy as it is not a very traditional body position, it allows the audience to be aware of her edgy style. Her body language conveys how laid back and free spirited she is, which is a major part of her image from being in the soul genre.

I chose to use bright colours for our artist costume, as this represents her vibrant personality and quirky culture, the colours will also co-ordinate to show that she is a perfectionist through her organisation of colours within her outfit. The bright colours also allow her to stand out against the brick wall within the advert, it emphasises her importance and success within the industry allowing her to seem more desirable to the audience.

Her makeup is quite bold to show how she likes to look after herself, however  not enough to take away any distraction from the rest of the mise-en-scene within the magazine advert.
The font used to write our artists name will be in plain, vintage writing to be conventional to the soul genre, it allows the audience to relate to the artist as she is portrayed as ordinary. This handwriting also will be used to encourage the audience to remember her identity as it is a very distinctive font which represents the artist and impressionable.

From planning my magazine advert before actually making it, I believe it has allowed me to analyse my decisions so that I can notice any decisions I have made and consider how they could be changed to make the advert more appealing to promote the album or conventional to the soul genre. As this has made us reconsider what kind os image to use as the main focus on our magazine advert, we will therefore take images throughout the whole filming stage, using different shots and angels, as well as additional shots that will be more posed for. I feel very prepared in the making of our magazine advert now because I am aware of the importance of each different angle, therefore know I need o capture my artist in many different ways.

Digipack analysis - Miss Miller

Digipaks are a type of packaging for CDs or DVDs, typically made from cardboard with an internal plastic holder for one or more discs. The purpose of them is to contain extra information or pictures about the artist to create a personal feel for the audience so that they feel more connected to the artist. Digipaks often contain bonus tracks, which differentiates them from CD's as well that they have more sides including more information. This makes them more successful towards fans than jewel CD cases, due to their personal content, allowing the audience to gain more information into the artist, as jewel CD cases only include limited information and protection.
Within Lana Del Rey's digipak, she is represented as very simple and ordinary, this is shown through the mise-en-scene of the image. She is wearing plain light clothing, with basic makeup which connects her to the audience because they can all relate to this, whereas conventionally successful music artists chose to advertise their money and luxurious lifestyles. Through her facial expression, the artist is represented as quite moody which conveys her to seem unappreciative of her success within the music industry.
The roses used on the CD itself are red and this is to represent love and passion, which is conventional to the soul genre as the songs tend to be based on previous romantic relationships or experiences. Having the red roses against a white background encourages them to stand out and emphasises their importance, however they are placed around the rim of the CD so that they are slightly hidden, this could imply that there is a secret meaning to their presence.
The image of Lana Del Rey is placed in the centre of the CD cover, this is used to help the audience recognise her as the artist that is singing the music they are listening to and remember her name in association to her face. She is showing a blank facial expression, which shows how she is not trying to promote herself, implying she cares more about her music.
Her name is wrote in white, block capitals against the blue, sky background, this may have been used so that her name could be interpreted to look like clouds, which may connote that she is a successful music artist. There is a constant white and light blue theme, and this is used to represent the sky which implies that she has made it, as within the industry there is a saying 'The sky is my limit'. The basic font and colour white also fits into the neutral theme, as it make it easy for the audience to read however does not draw too much attention from the image of Lana. The name of the album 'Born to die' is in smaller font and in a light blue colour, this matches the colour of the setting behind her and is used to stand out against her white shirt. The typography used is very simple to encourage the audience to read and understand it however not to be distracted by the other elements on the cover e.g; image, album name. As Lana has such a diverse image she has many different trademarked fonts that she uses on media, this is one of her most common because of the simplicity and specified genre of the songs within the album.
This digipak promotes the artist by representing her as an approachable, ordinary person which the audience can relate to because she looks similar to themselves. This image to was created to be conventional to the soul genre as soul songs tend to be based on relatable topics in which the audience may have experienced themselves, having used such a simple and sophisticated layout it stereotypically portrays a soul digipak.

From having analysed this digipak we now have an insight in how to attract our specific target audience and successfully conveying our chosen genre. Using simple and basic foundations allows our audience to relate to the artist, therefore we will make sure not to over complicate our cover, only using one image of our artist and conventional colours and fonts. However we will try to divert from being to stereotypical by experimenting with different camera angles for the image of our artist for example, mid shots, closeups, extreme closeups and establishing shots, so that we can see which best suits the image of our artist.

4.    Are there any links within Media e.g TV/Film/Magazines etc

Independent labels are labels that operate one or few music labels, they
can be just as successful but operate from a smaller company base. They are traditionally known as offering more ‘organic’ music rather than manufactured mainstream and there are many different independent record labels within the UK.

Boy Better Know
Boy Better Know is an English grime music collective; a group of musicians, a grime record label and a brand. The collective was formed in North London by JME, his brother Skepta and Wiley. The band and label were established by Jamie Adenuga, also known as JME, in 2005. "Boy Better Know" is also a clothing line, sweet shop and a line of mobile sim cards. Members of the label include;

  • Skepta
  • JME
  • Wiley
  • Jammer
  • Frisco
  • DJ Maximum
  • Short
  • Solo 45
  • DJ Preditah
Warp
Warp commonly referred to as Warp Records, is an independent British record label, founded in Sheffield in 1989, specialising in electronic music. It was founded in 1989 by Steve Beckett and the late Rob Mitchell from their experiences working at the FON record shop, alongside record producer Robert Gordon, the label soon became home to artists who would be influential in electronic music. They manage many artists such as;
  • Aphex Twin
  • Darkstar
  • Red Snapper
  • Seefeel
  • TNGHT
Tempa
Tempa is a dubstep, 2-step garage and UK garage record label run by Ammunition Promotions, out of the Truman Brewery, East London. Created in 1999, Tempa is now widely considered to be one of the founding labels of the dubstep sound. They have managed many different artists such as;
  • Skream
  • Benga
  • Truth
  • Kode9
  • DJ Hatcha
I believe that having 4 companies dominating the music industry is not right in terms of the music view, as within these 4 companies there is a clear bias towards specific genres of music, which are known to be most popular. It does not allow other sub genres or non mainstream genres to be as recognised towards a larger audience for example genres such as Grime, Garage and Dubstep, who belong to independent record labels.  This effects the industry by causing there to be a drop in the quality of the artists and music produced by the 4 main companies as they focus more on selling the songs than making them.
I believe from the industry point of view, having 4 main companies dominating the music industry is most likely to be positive, considering the 4 main companies can take advantage of the power they have over audiences and find it easier to create new artists and music. Independent companies have to work harder to appeal to people however because of their niche market they only have to aim to please a small sector therefore can focus most of their attention on the quality of the music. However there is still a large demand for these kinds of genres because of the different kinds of cultures developing across the UK and because of the increase of music artists creating a wider variety of songs to listen to. This effects the industry by causing an increase in competition between and in genres, artists from different labels will compete against each other to gain the most profit and have better/more reputation.
Independent labels are not particularly as successful as major labels because of the difference of population within their target audiences, however there is a majority of artists from independent companies that will be more recognisable and possibly sell more singles/albums. This is because of the better quality of music produced by independent companies and because of the vast amount of different sounds they offer.
