Planning lighting and colour - Miss Georgiou

A variety of lighting styles and colours are essential within music videos as they make the scenes more conventional to the genre of the artist so that the audience are away of how to song will sound. For example using a lot of different colours and bright lighting would be appropriate within club/dance genres as it represents energy, fun and happiness. Using this lighting would also effect the audiences mood, and persuade them to feel the same as the characters and/or artist within the music video.

Within our music video we will be using a majority of natural lighting, for example when the artist is singing in front of the graffiti wall and throughout all of the flashbacks, this is because we feel that it would make it easier for the audience to relate with as no artificial light is added. As our artist would be in a public location, having a natural lighting would also be much more convenient and realistic because it would become extremely difficult to add extra lighting with bystanders surrounding us. There will also be a lot of colours used within these scenes as it is typical for them to be attending in a natural, public setting. The natural lighting is conventional to the soul genre as it gives a very personal impression to the audience, which is the main focus of soul songs as they are intentionally personal of the artists life. It represents the artist to be very relatable and normal, which allows the audience to connect with them as they come across as an ordinary person.

During the bedroom and bathroom scene, we will be using quite dull lighting, this will be used to allow the emotional representation of lyrics to connect with the sadness portrayed through the visuals of the dark lighting. Within these scenes our artist is upset and we believe using this lighting will help contribute to them being aware of this, as it does not promote a happy or content atmosphere, instead is reveals how truly hurt she is. This is very conventional to the soul genre as it conveys a pessimistic message to the audience, because the dull colours do not connote any positive feelings. This represents our artist as distressed and wounded, which is how she is feeling after her breakup and this is a conventional narrative to be shown in music videos for the soul genre.

  1. This post demonstrates basic planning techniques and this is because you have not considered your whole production and have only focused on two scenes. Therefore, you need to refer back to your storyboards to ensure that you have included points on all the lighting styles that you would like to include.

What colours will you focus on to demonstrate the conventions of soul and build a relationship with your target audience?
