Planning editing styles - Miss Georgiou

Using a variety of editing styles within a music video is important because it helps keep the relationship between the visuals and music in time with each other, which is included in Dyers theory. It also keeps the audience more engaged as if no editing styles were used in the music video it would become quite boring as transitions would be very simple, this would make people less likely to continue watching. Within our music video we have decided to use three main editing styles which are; Slow pace, flashback and jump-cut.

We will be using slow pace editing throughout the whole music video as this is the most conventional style for the soul genre, as it matches the speed of the actual music which is stereotypically torpid. This is because of the depressing nature of the songs, soul is a genre which represents emotions and past experiences most of which are melancholy. We will be using the slow paced editing throughout the bathroom and bedroom scene, this is because this is when we show our artist at her most vulnerable and when the verses are playing. The slow editing will represent our artist as very distressed and upset as she is reminiscing on her previous relationship, it reflects all of the emotions she is feeling towards to audience through the elongated time she is on the screen. As the editing it slower, the audience will have more time to focus on her facial expressions and body language to discover how she is really feeling, this builds on the relationship the artist and the audience have.

Flashback editing will be used when we will play the flashbacks of the characters relationship throughout the verses, this allows the audience to be clearly aware that they are previous experiences that have taken place. This is a conventional editing style used within the soul genre as it allows the audience to be aware of the background of the lyrics and what led the artist into creating the song. The flashbacks will be positive memories of the male and female and therefore will change the mood of the audience, which means the editing has to be clear so that the audience do not become confused. A relationship between the artist and audience will be created through them seeing all of the experiences she has shared with her ex, as they become aware of the dynamics of her past they will understand more about her and her heartbreak. The flashbacks will represent the artist as relatable as they show how why she is feeling the emotions she is, because she is upset that someone that made her so happy has disappeared from her life. The audience will be able to relate to her through this, the editing also represents her as ordinary as she is grieving for something she no longer has.

Jump-cuts are a conventional editing style used within almost all genres, they are used for the soul purpose of switching immediately and subtly between the narratives. We are using jump-cuts to move from one setting to another within the storyline, for example when our artist is singing in front of the graffiti wall, we will then switch back to when she is in the bath. The jump-cut aims to avoid the audience from waiting or being confused between the transitions of scenes as well as making them run smoothly and professionally. They allow the artist to be represented how they wish to be. If the jump-cuts are used between her performing then he playing a character they show he to be talented as she is interchangeable through the music video.

  1. This post demonstrates proficient planning techniques, which is evident through the different editing styles that you have selected to include within your music video. It is clear to see that you have considered the conventions of soul and how your production will build a relationship with your audience.

Aim to relate your examples back to the lyrics of your song, to demonstrate further planning techniques of why you have decided to include certain styles within your production.
