Planning cinematography - Miss Georigou

Cinematography is very important within music videos as different shots are used to create different effects for the audience. The shots used make the scene more professional and portray the narrative/performance to the audience in the most effective and relatable method as possible. The five main shots we will be using include;
  1. Closeup
  2. Birds eye view
  3. Over the shoulder
  4. Handheld
  5. Establishing shot
Many closeups will be used of the artist throughout the music video to convey to the audience the emotions and feelings that she is experiencing. This is because we have found through extensive research that this is a very conventional method, used in the soul genre, of allowing the audience to connect to the audience. We will use a closeup of the artist when she is laying in bed, once the male character dissapears to emphasise how hurt and upset she is that he has left her, it will highlight her heartache. We will use another closeup of our artist during the flashbacks of her past relationship to show how happy and content she was when she was with him, this will show to audience how much he meant to her and how much she desired him. This is will illiterate how much agony and discomfort she is in without him.

Birds eye view will be used when the artist is in bed, this shot will be used to capture both her and her ex in bed together as well as the setting of the bedroom. We believe this shot would be the most effective one to use as it guarantees that the characters are the main focus of the shot and that we get a clear view. Using this shot will also make it easier to editing the male character out when he disappears the bed, it would also be hard to make the scene look professional if we used a shot from a different angle such as from the side.

Over the shoulder shot will be used when the artist is looking into the mirror, we chose this shot because it would capture her reflection which we believe would look very authentic and is quite creative. We would also zoom in and out of this shot to show the back of the artist as well as just her reflection, we believe this is best effective because it captures everything we wanted in the shot, whereas using a camera shot such as a mid shot or high angle would not capture both the artist and her reflection. We would use many transitions from all different distances to make sure the audience do not get to bored of the same camera shots or the scene.

We would use handheld when filming the flashbacks, for example when the male and female character are shopping or holding hands within the public place. We would use this shot for these scenes to enable the audience to feel as if they was there at the location watching the two themselves, it creates a connection between the audience and characters as the memories are personal and private to the artist and this is emphasised through the choice of camera shot. Using handheld will also make it easier to move around the location, as the characters will be not be still like they are in most of the other scenes, therefore using handheld we can follow the characters making sure we capture them at the right angles at the right times without difficulty.

We would use an establishing shot when our artist is singing against the graffiti background, we chose this shot because it shows the audience both the location and the artist. We want our location to be clear to the audience because it represents the style of our artist, the graffiti background portrays the quirky and indie culture that she belongs to. This makes it easy for the audience to relate to as they have most probably been to this location before and therefore they can connect to our artist as she would be seen as relatable as it is a normal and popular place to go. Using a different shot such as a mid shot would not be as effective as it would not capture the amount of background we aimed to put into our video, the establishing shot also shows how our artist fits in with the setting as they represent the same style.

  1. This post demonstrates some planning techniques. You have considered the purpose of cinematography elements well and have focused on the effect that you will want to create well. However, further discussion of how your points relate to soul conventions is needed to demonstrate further planning. Also aim to include images too.

    Now you need to relate your explanations back to your lyrics, to demonstrate further understanding of why you have selected to use certain shots in your production.
