Planning cinematography - Miss Georigou

Cinematography is very important within music videos as different shots are used to create different effects for the audience. The shots used make the scene more professional and portray the narrative/performance to the audience in the most effective and relatable method as possible. The five main shots we will be using include;
  1. Closeup
  2. Birds eye view
  3. Over the shoulder
  4. Handheld
  5. Establishing shot
Many closeups will be used of the artist throughout the music video to convey to the audience the emotions and feelings that she is experiencing. This is because we have found through extensive research that this is a very conventional method, used in the soul genre, of allowing the audience to connect to the audience. We will use a closeup of the artist when she is laying in bed, once the male character dissapears to emphasise how hurt and upset she is that he has left her, it will highlight her heartache. We will use another closeup of our artist during the flashbacks of her past relationship to show how happy and content she was when she was with him, this will show to audience how much he meant to her and how much she desired him. This is will illiterate how much agony and discomfort she is in without him.

Birds eye view will be used when the artist is in bed, this shot will be used to capture both her and her ex in bed together as well as the setting of the bedroom. We believe this shot would be the most effective one to use as it guarantees that the characters are the main focus of the shot and that we get a clear view. Using this shot will also make it easier to editing the male character out when he disappears the bed, it would also be hard to make the scene look professional if we used a shot from a different angle such as from the side.

Over the shoulder shot will be used when the artist is looking into the mirror, we chose this shot because it would capture her reflection which we believe would look very authentic and is quite creative. We would also zoom in and out of this shot to show the back of the artist as well as just her reflection, we believe this is best effective because it captures everything we wanted in the shot, whereas using a camera shot such as a mid shot or high angle would not capture both the artist and her reflection. We would use many transitions from all different distances to make sure the audience do not get to bored of the same camera shots or the scene.

We would use handheld when filming the flashbacks, for example when the male and female character are shopping or holding hands within the public place. We would use this shot for these scenes to enable the audience to feel as if they was there at the location watching the two themselves, it creates a connection between the audience and characters as the memories are personal and private to the artist and this is emphasised through the choice of camera shot. Using handheld will also make it easier to move around the location, as the characters will be not be still like they are in most of the other scenes, therefore using handheld we can follow the characters making sure we capture them at the right angles at the right times without difficulty.

We would use an establishing shot when our artist is singing against the graffiti background, we chose this shot because it shows the audience both the location and the artist. We want our location to be clear to the audience because it represents the style of our artist, the graffiti background portrays the quirky and indie culture that she belongs to. This makes it easy for the audience to relate to as they have most probably been to this location before and therefore they can connect to our artist as she would be seen as relatable as it is a normal and popular place to go. Using a different shot such as a mid shot would not be as effective as it would not capture the amount of background we aimed to put into our video, the establishing shot also shows how our artist fits in with the setting as they represent the same style.

Magazine advert analysis - Miss Miller

roles The purpose of a magazine album advert is to allow the target audience to be aware of the release of the album, so that they can go out and purchase it. However the advert has to also be appealing so that it can attract people from outside of the target audience, which will result in reaching a wider audience and therefore increase sales. Magazine album adverts also promote the artist so that they can become more familiar and gain a bigger reputation, gaining an advert in a magazine may also encourage the magazine to interview the artist, which means will benefit not only the magazine but the artist as well.

The two album adverts I will be analysing will be Paloma Faiths 'A Perfect Contradiction' album and Adele's album '21'.

Within Paloma Faiths magazine album advert she is represented as both diverse and quirky, the use all of all the different costumes and identities shows how she had a unique style and can adapt to all roles she plays. Having Paloma shot in many different outfits and posing as several different personas may be a strategy to convey how she is relatable to all individuals and that her music is influenced by many people and experiences.
A range of colours are used on her costume and makeup to catch the attention of the readers so that they stay on the page and view the advert, however the main colour that stands out is the bright red hair of the artist. The fact that the artist has her hair this colour shows how she has a bold and quirky personality which she embraces for each character she poses as on the advert. The colour red represents passion, confidence and love, which all are used to express her personality to the audience so that they can understand her better. The robe used to cover her naked body is white, this is because it represents her purity and innocence, which is important to convey as people could misinterpret her image when they see that she is exposing herself. The colour green also stand our as it is used within two of her outfits, this colour is used to represent how she does not follow the conventions of being a female music artist. The colour green is a primary colour that represents her to be individual and independent, the green also portrays fresh and new which can be related back to her music.
The main focus of the advert is that it has been editing to create several Paloma's all dressed differently as the main image, which is placed directly in the middle of the page. This is used as a strategy to make sure the audience remember the identity of the artist and to attract a wider audience by using a variety of characters. The name of the artist is placed at the top of the screen so that it is the first thing the audience see, which will mean that they will associate her name with the magazine and any other images used within the advert. The information on the release of the album and the names of the singles featured on it, is places at the bottom of the page and this is because it will be the last thing the audience will see therefore the date will be fresh in their minds so they will be more likely to remember to go out and purchase it.
The font used for the artist name is quite quirky and vintage as it seems to look like it has been handwritten using ink, therefore relates the artists style and personality as she is representative of the olden times era. The font is also very easy to read, which means the audience will not have complications understanding what has been written and are less likely to be distracted. The colour of the font is white, which allows it to stand out against the image it is over, it is also used to avoid taking any concentration away from the image.
The advert promotes the album by showing the quirkiness of the artist, which will make the audience assume that the music will be similar in style and they will be intrigued to listen. The advert has many different conventions of the soul genre, including the costume, font and colours, it attracts the target audience as it represents all the things in which they are interested in.

Within Adele's album magazine advert, she is not looking in the direction of the camera, which represents her as shy and also portrays her as unhappy. She is looking down so that we cannot see her face clearly, this is used to show the audience how as an artist she does not care so much about her image as she does her music.
Only half of her face is used within the image, this is another way of representing her as modest, this shows how she is humble about her talent as a singer. Adele is a very popular soul artist, who is well known for her melancholy songs that are based on her real like experiences of heartbreak, which means that even using a small image like this will still successfully familiarise the audience with her identity.
The whole advert is in black and white, this represents the old fashioned style which is conventional to the soul genre, the use of no colour avoids any distraction from the main focus of the advert which is the album name and the image and name of the artist. There name of the album '21' is the only thing on the page that uses colour, which is yellow. This is used to make it stand out because it is in the same font and positioning as the rest of the writing, therefore making it a different colour ensures the audience remember the name of the album so that they can go out and buy it. A picture of the actual CD is placed at the bottom of the page, so that it is the last thing the audience see and will therefore be fresh in their memory, it is also is placed on the opposite side of the image of the artist to avoid covering it or stealing any attention away from it.
The font used it very simple and the writing is all in capitals, this is used so that is easy to read which will assure that the audience will read it. It also shows represents the artists personality as very relatable and easy going as she has not decided to use a fancy font which is conventionally used to show off the artists success and confidence.
The advert promotes the album as it successfully follows the conventions of the soul genre through things such as the colour, image and layout, therefore the target audience will be aware of the main sound of the songs and decided to listen to it. The image shows her as weak and hurt, which will make the audience assume this will be conveyed through her music and lyrics, which will make them interested in purchasing the album.

Lyric Analysis - Miss Georgiou

Our song we chose is Paloma Faith 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' and throughout the song there is a few hidden meanings, the song is outlining how hurt and damaged she is from her relationship with a man. When she says 'Must have been a deadly kiss' you could interpret her describing how he's kiss causes her an unbearable pain that symbolises death, this shows how deep and strong her love for him is. 'Your kisses burning through my skin' this is similar to the previous line, it shows how he's kisses cause her a physical pain which represents how he has such a huge impact on her psychological health. From annotating the lyrics of this song, we have found out that there is alot of emotion and pain felt by the artist, therefore throughout our music video we will use different shots and editing effects to help convey this to the audience. There are many things we picked up on which we can incorporate into our music video and within this post I will be explaining what and how.

We have annotated the lyrics by highlighting and making notes off of the parts in which we can incorporate narrative ideas into, as well as the parts in which we believe we can use specific cinematography and mise-en-scene for to portray the lyrics.
  • 'I tell myself, you don't mean a thing' - When our artist is singing this line, we are going to have her singing into the mirror using a over the shoulder shot to represent her telling herself how she feels.
  • 'But when you're not there' - We will have our artist laying in bed imagining her ex laying next to her, when she sings this line the male character will fade from the scene.
  • 'I just crumble' - We could have our character/artist fall apart in the scene to convey how they are crumbling from the pain they are experiencing.
  • 'Till I feel your touch' we could have our male and female character touch each other and make it positioned into the middle of the camera shot.
  • 'Must have been a deadly kiss' - We would have our male and female character kiss to show how the kiss they share.

Planning artist image - Miss Georgiou

Having an artist representation is important within a music video because it  allows the audience to recognise the genre of the song. The costume, hair and makeup used has to represent the style of the artist, so that they can create a reputation that they want for themselves, it also allows the target audience to relate to the artist as they are most likely to have a similar style.

The costume we will be using in our music video on our artist will be very quirky and vintage, as she has a very distinctive look which represents a old fashioned genre. For one outfit our artist will be wearing very casual clothing including a blouse and trousers, however we will dress her in a floppy hat and bold necklace. This is to help keep her very relatable however also to represent her as vintage as she can transform a simple outfit into something quirky and modern. This is conventional to the soul genre, as it has a very elegant yet quirky style, within many music videos I analysed I found that the female often wear hats that are large and stand out on the artists. This image helps shows how the artist likes to be deviate from the social norm however still conform to the stereotypical soul genre conventions as this image is very popular within the soul genre.

The makeup that we will use on our music artist will involve a subtle base, so that our artist is quite pale. This is because back in olden times this was the popular choice of makeup, therefore it symbolises her representation of a more vintage and sophisticated time period. She will also have eye liner that will flick up from the sides of her eyes, as well as eye shadow and a thick layer of mascara. The heavy use of eye makeup encourages the audience to concentrate on the artists eyes allowing them to relate and understand the facial expressions the artist is making, which means they can connect to her. A bright coloured lipstick will also be used so that her lips stand out to the audience and grab their attention, this will be used so that they can focus on not only her image but what he singing as well so that she is represented to have passion for her music as well as how she is perceived. This is conventional to the soul genre because within many existing music videos this makeup effect is used and successfully represents the artists in the way we want ours to be perceived as for example; Amy Winehouse and Duffy.

When our artist is not wearing a hat, she will have her hair backcombed and curled to show how women from past decades have worn their hair, this will show the elegance yet quirkiness our artist represents. We will make sure the curls are not too tight or loose because the curls are meant to represent the perfectionist persona of our artist as the old fashioned style is quite traditional and aims to impress others. The backcombing will be representative to the quirkiness of our artist as it is very wild and bold, it creates volume and adds to the personality of our artists image. This is very conventional to the soul genre as it is a very popular choice of style for example; Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Planning setting and iconography - Miss Georgiou

Having several different locations in a music video stops the audience from becoming disintrested and stop watching it. The locations encourage the audience to continue watching, as it makes the video fascinating as if the same location was used then it would become predictable which is very boring. The locations are also very important as they help convey the genre of song, for example having a club location would imply that the genre of the song is most likely to be dance as this is where the music is normally played.

Throughout our video we have planned to use both the bathroom and bedroom within a house location,  we have chosen these locations as we believe using a home will convey the personal aspect of the song. The artist is vulnerable and is seen at her weakest throughout the majority of the song, therefore we will show her where she feels the safest by using a home location, which can also allow the audience to gain an insight of the artists true identity and they can connect with her on a deeper level. The location is also very conventional to the soul genre as it tends to aways be used in the narrative theme of music videos, as the love stories are stereotypically filmed throughout the couples home especially the bedroom. The bathroom will represent how she is trying to wash away the feeling of the boys touch on her skin, which she is singing about, the bathroom also represents how she is pure at heart and the feelings she is conveying are real. We will be filming our artist in the bath in this location, when she us surrounded by pictures of her and her ex and this is used to represent her drowning her sorrows.
The bedroom will represent how she is reminiscing on her previous relationship and imagining her ex next to her in bed when she was at her happiest being close to him. The bedroom is used to give the audience a personal insight into her life, as an individuals bedroom is their most personal place. Within this location we will film our artist putting on makeup in the mirror showing her trying to cover up her sadness, we will also be filming our artist in bed with flashbacks of her ex laying next to her.
We are limited by using this location as we cannot perform many different camera shots because of the restricted space, because of this our artist may not be able to express herself in a deeper manor as she cannot move as freely as possible and the shots may not be captured in the most effective way. However we will try our best to think of the best alternatives, which we believe will be if anything more creative and entertaining for the audience.
I dont believe using this location will cause any health and safety risks as it is a very safe environment which we spend a majority of our time in daily surrounded by people only we know and trust.
Whatever weather we are faced with on our scheduled days of filming, we will not be effected as this is an inside location therefore if it was to be windy, rainy or snowing we could carry on with our rehearsed and planned filming.

Our next location would be in Bricklane, we will use this location to represent the quirky and indie style that our artist is apart of, the location has many different settings in which we believe will be suitable for our music video. We believe this is a conventional setting to use in our music video in terms of matching our artists image, as she is very individual and stands out from the crowd, which is a very common desire of the people that visit this location as they belong to the same culture.
We will film our artist singing on a graffiti backdrop, to make her style stand out to the audience as it is quite rebellious, we will also film many of the flashbacks of our artist and he ex from when they was happy in this location. Flashbacks will include normal couple things such as the two characters holding hands, play fighting and trying on products from the shops, this will hopefully fit in with our location as it in in an area where the people are not known for being judgemental.
Limitations of using this location could involve restriction of space as it may be very busy and therefore we would not have much room to film our artist against the wall if others are in the way of the camera. Using this location may also involve catching passers on camera which they may not be happy or consent to using the footage. However we can overcome this by visiting the location during hours in which we believe will be most appropriate for us to film, such as early hours or weekdays.
I do not believe there will be many health and safety risks of using this location as it is a public place in which many people visit daily, however we will be cautious of the environment to assure that bystanders do not interrupt or disturb our filming.
We could face issues with our filming if there is bad weather such as rain or snow as this location is outside however we would overcome this by moving to other similar locations, or finding shops and roads that are better facilitated such as indoors, or underground tunnels which commonly have graffiti on.

To begin with we will be using a large dressing tabel which has a mirror hung in the middle of it and conventional objects placed on top such as candles, flowers and cosmetics. This will be used to show our artist looking in the mirror and applying makeup whilst singing the opening of the song. We chose to use a traditional dressing tabel instead of a common, simple mirror as we believe that the dressing tabel conveys the authentic and vintage look that we want artist to represent. It will also give the scene a stronger sense of a real home rather than a set, which even though it is the audience are unaware of, it is also an object in which many people own themselves therefore the audience can relate to it.
We are also going to use a double bed with very feminine sheets and it will be neatly made. This will be used to show our aritst laying down imaginging her ex laying beside her, the scene will be shot using a birds eye view, therefore the whole bed will be caught within the shot. We are using this object to show the normality of what typical couples would have done together, therefore the audience will be able to relate to this iconography as well. The double bed will be used to emphasise how lonely and hurt the artist is now that she is without her boyfriend, and the neatness will emphasis how she is trying to keep herself together.
A simple, white bath with traditional feet on the bottom will be used within the scene where the artist is in the bath surrounded by pictures of memories she has had with her ex. The bath will be used to show how she is attempting to take part in every day activities such as washing herself yet she still cannot get over her ex. It also represents how she is trying to wash away hes touch as it is causing her too much pain reminicing on her past relationship.

Research into chosen music genre - Miss Georgiou

The genre of the music video 'Only love can hurt like this' by Paloma Faith is soul, we chose this genre because we feel we will be able to recreate a music video of a song as we can portray a lot of emotion and feelings using a narrative concept. Soul songs have a strong deeper meaning behind the lyrics and we hope to take advantage of this when filming our music video, by using characters to portray the true meanings.

Amy Winehouse - You know i'm no good
Within this music video Amy Winehouse uses a lot of close ups for example when she is in the bath, this is very conventional for the soul genre because it focuses on highlighting the feelings of the artist. As the genre is soul, conventionally the lyrics are very deep and meaningful therefore the closeups successfully affect the viewers perception of the mood of the artist, which is normally quite depressing or emotional.
There are many settings used within the music video, there is a bar, bathroom, bedroom, and police office. These settings represent the artists lifestyle and also have a relationship with the lyrics, the concept of the song is that she is cheating on her boyfriend but she had warned him she was going to hurt him. The bar represents her excessive need to drink alcohol to stop the guilt, the bedroom represents how she is unfaithful to her boyfriend sexually, the bathroom represents how she cleans herself to try wash away her sins and the police office represents how she has been caught. These settings are conventional because they all embody the artists private life and retrospectively reflect the artists previous experiences.
The costume and make up of the artist is very vintage looking, this is a very conventional to the soul genre as commonly the theme is old fashioned and traditional. This is used to grasp the attention and appeal to the demands of the target audience, as they are older men and mainly women who are fond of an appreciate this style.
The editing between transitions used in this video is quite slow paced, this is because there is a relationship between the music and the visuals, as the song is quite slow paced the editing has to be in the same context.
Goodwins theory is used quite a lot within the video for example my previous point of there being a relationship between the music and visuals as well as a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. When Amy Winehouse is laying in the bed with a man, she is shown in a voyeuristic manor, as her breasts are positioned in the centre of the screen and the man is touching her in a sexual way. This is used to promote the artist by giving female viewers an inspirational role model and for the male viewers a sexual object to stare at.
This video is both narrative and performance based, this is because there is a story being told throughout the video as there are characters and plots in which the audience can connect with and be entertained by. However Amy is starred in the whole music video, whether she be acting as a character or singing in to the camera, this highlights her talent in the performing arts and music industry.

Adele - Cold Shoulder
Within this music video there is a lot of closeups used, and similar to the previous video, this is used to present to the audience the emotions of the artist so that the viewers can connect to them. This is conventional to the soul genre as soul songs represent the feelings and past experiences of the artists which can be portrayed through the facial expressions and body language that they show in the shots. The editing within this video is very unconventional for the soul genre as it is quite fast, even though it follows Goodwins theory of having a relationship with the music and visuals for this particular song, its still very uncommon within soul music videos as it distracts from the emotion of the lyrics.
The costume and makeup used within this music video are very simplistic and also vintage, which is similar to the previous video. Her hair is neatly tied up into an old fashioned bun to the side and her makeup consists of authentic eye liner, this appearance is used to help attract her target audience, which is younger adults with a very alternative and quirky look.
Adele is represented as very emotional and talented throughout this video as it is primarily performance based, therefore focuses on her vocal talent as she sings into the camera for the majority of the song. As the song is very deep and personal she has a connection with it, which is shown when she is singing into the camera. This portrays her to be very fragile and vulnerable, which is very conventional for soul artists as they stereotypically have a lot of pain and hurt inside them.
Goowdins theory is used within this music video through the closeups, which help promote the artist as the viewers will become familiar with her style and appearance. There is also a minute relationship between the lyrics and visuals as the lyrics 'Cold shoulder' are repeated throughout the song and there is several ice sculptures surrounding adele in the video. There is also a relationship between the visuals and music, when the song begins to pick up in speed the transitions between scenes become in sync with the beat.

Target audience results - Miss Miller

  1. Are you male or female?
  2. How old are you?
  3. Do you prefer your music videos to be..                                                                                        a) Narrative b) Concept c) Performance
  4. What is your favourite music video and why?
  5. What setting do you prefer in a music video and why?
  6. What gender do you prefer in a music video..                                                                                a) Female b) Male c) Both
  7. Whats your favourite music video and why?
  8. Who's your favourite music artist and why?
  9. In your own opinion, what makes a good music video?
  10. Do you like the artist to be featured in the music video and why?
When planning our music video we had to carry out a questionnaire in order to collect information based on our genre and artist, we gave it out to 40 individuals all from different ages and genders. We used a large sample to guarantee that our results would be representative and to gain the perception and opinions of all different audiences. With these results we can chose certain aspects of how we will create our music video for example the setting, characters, theme and inspirations fit to our specific target audience.

From our results we found out that 75% of the people we asked like to see the artist within the music video, when asked why they revealed that they chose that answer they said that it was because they like to be able to recognise who is singing and can connect to them on a better level when they are featured within the music video. Therefore we will have our artist featuring in our music video throughout, so that the audience can connect with her and become familiar with who she is.
When we asked who is your favourite music video, the majority of the results showed that Ed Sheeran was their choice, then in close second Sam Smith. We believe this can be to our advantage, because the genre of these two artists is also soul, therefore we know that a large section of our audience enjoy listening to soul songs and in result we can use the opinions of the people we asked as they fit our target audience. One direction and Katy Perry came in with the lowest percentages and this would be because they fit into the pop genre, from this we will be careful not to include any conventions that could be misinterpreted as pop.
The majority of the people we questioned were from the ages 16-20 and this was because they were the people who were most available to ask, however we also asked a reasonable amount of people from the other, older age categories, therefore our results should be representative of ages from 16-50.
We asked both male and females when giving our our questionnaire as we wanted to receive information that could be representative of both genders, we happened to question a few more female people however we are sure that this did not effect our results. However using more females was more beneficial as they were more willing to expand on their answers and give us a more descriptive opinion.
53% of the people we questioned also said that they prefer the narrative theme the most, therefore we would use a story to convey the deeper meanings of the lyrics, however 35% of people also preferred the performance theme, therefore our music video will feature the artist singing. Our audience enjoy these two concepts because they believe the narration gives them a better understanding of what the artist was trying to portray when writing the lyrics and they like the performance concept so they can give recognition to the artists talents.
When asked which setting was preferred in a music video, the answer with the highest percentage was none with 35%, No background meant that there would be a backdrop, or a plain background that meant the artist/characters would be more in focus of the shot. I believe people chose this option because it would grab there attention the most as it allows them to connect to whoever in on the screen. A close second was Public Location at 28% and then Home at 23%, this helped us decide that when shooting our music video we could go to any location and still fulfil our audiences wants, as they enjoy a variety and surprise when choosing the location of the music video. The home setting also collected a high percentage because it is typically a conventional setting for the soul genre, as it is very personal.
The results from the question 'Who do you prefer in a music video?' showed that the majority (50%) prefer there to be both male and female characters in the music video, at 33% was the female choice and 18% was the male choice. We believe we received these results in connection to the fact that most people prefer the narrative and storyline theme, therefore the female and male in the video would represent the narration, which would stereotypically be a love story within the soul genre.
When asked what is your favourite music video, Sam Smith - Not The Only One won with 37% of the results, this shows that the audience enjoy watching soul videos with a love story narrative, this means we can incorporate ideas from previously made soul music videos. Ed Sheeran - Sing came in at second with 28% which also shows how enthusiastic people are about the soul genre as the other two options that did not receive as many votes are both pop.
From my research we have discovered what engages and entertains individuals from our target audience and can incorporate this into my music video. From our research we discovered that the preferred genre was dance at 43%, which was most probably because the majority of the people we asked were younger. However we decided to do our music video on soul, which was a close second at 30% as we believed we would be more capable and creative filming a music video from the soul genre, which was a close second. This probably was because they believe they can connect to the artist on a deeper level and relate to them, therefore from this we would try to include a lot closeups to present all of the strong emotions through facial expressions.
We also received other information that contributed to our decision of choosing to have a narrative for our music, which was that 35% of the people we asked found that in their opinion a storyline made a good music video, we also found that 22% thought dance routines make a music video and 14% found that the costumes used make a good music video.

If we were to carry out research again we would be most likely to change the questions so that we would receive a more detailed response from our questionies. As you can see in the bottom pie chart, one of the popular preferred setting from our sample was none, which means they enjoy watching music videos on a back drop so that they are not distracted from the artist of narrative. However having the setting of a public location was equally as preferred, this would include places such as the park, streets, shopping centres, train stations etc.

A subculture is a branch off from mainstream culture embracing it's own unique style. Often times, as more and more people do it, pieces of various subcultures become mainstreamHebdige came to the conclusion that although some people think subcultures only appear to be different, deep down they are the same, he says if you look deeper, there is enough richness to warrant renaming ‘subcultures’ as ‘little cultures’. We believe that our artist Paloma Faith belongs to many of her own little subcultures, such as Burlesque, Vintage and Indie. Paloma shows style from all of these cultures from the way she dresses to the way she sings, her outfits are normally very flamboyant and raunchy which applies to the burlesque culture, however she can dress very diverse such as indie, as well as glamourous and demode from the vintage style. From this we can apply her very assorted style into our music video by having a variety of outfits and settings to portray how diverse she is. If we contribute small parts of each style into the video we can also reach out to a wider audience,

Research into chosen music artist - Miss Georgiou

Our chosen music artist is Paloma Faith, as a group we decided to choose Paloma because we feel that she represents the soul genre in a modern way. She has a edgy look which can relate and appeal to a wide audience, we feel that reinventing a music video from one of her song would be very adaptable as we could use her alternative nature to experiment with different shots and concepts.

Paloma Faith Blomfield (aged 33) originally from Hackney, London is a British singer-songwriter and actress, known for her unique, retro and eccentric style. She completed A-levels and then went on to do a degree in contemporary dance and a MA in theatre directing, she funded her studies through part time jobs such as; a sales assistant, a singer in a burlesque bar, a life model and a magicians assistant. Faith has received three BRIT Award nominations, including British Female Solo Artist and Best British Album, she has also featured within St Trinian'sThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Dread. Paloma Faith - Just Be
Within the music video 'Just Be' the majority of the editing is very slow and transitions between scenes and characters are gradual. The slow editing makes the music video more sensitive and personal, as it allows the audience to connect with the characters through having them on screen for longer and enhancing their emotions. This type of editing is also used to build a relationship between the music and visuals, it is in sync with the beat of the song, creating a more professional and conventional effect, which is explained within Goodwins theory.
Another point from Goodwins theory used within the music video is that there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, the lyrics 'Don't say nothing, just sit next to me' are repeated throughout the song and as it is sung the male character continuously sits down next to Paloma. This relationship between the lyrics and visuals as used to encourage viewers to create a association, so that they can remember the music video whenever they hear the lyrics in the song, this will create stronger recognition and in turn publicity.
There is also a voeyristic use of the female body within the music video, which is another point from Goodwins theory. Paloma is shown naked curled up into herself in clips throughout the video, this is used to attract the attention of the male audience who will view her as a sexual object, aswell as create a inspirational icon towards the female audience. Using Paloma in this way within the video successfully lures viewers into continuing watching the video, it automatically grabs attention as it is controversial. However within this video it also has a hidden meaning, as the use of her naked body is to percieve her as vulnerable and unprotected, her body language and posture show her to be weak. The music video is primarily narrative based, as there is a love story going on throughout the whole video, however Paloma is playing the woman within the love story and on several occasions sings into the path of the camera meaning there is a lot of performance base as well as narrative. These are used as they are very popular themes within music videos and they allow to audience to connect with the artist as well as being entertained.
Palomas costume is very vintage as she wears an old fashioned hat with a plain black dress and heels, this is used to create a antique look which will appeal to her target audience. The video is also in black and white which falls into this same point, the obsolete theme reaches out the the more mature fans, who can relate to the mimiced decade. There are many settings used throughout the video, however the main ones used include a bar, a bedroom and a sofa in which the characters are receiving counsilling. This is used to show how relationships develops over the years, from meeting each other to growing old. I believe these settings are used to allow the audience to relate to the relationship played out by the characters as they will go through the same or similar issues within their lives.
Paloma is represented as vulnerable in this video as she is shown to be in love which leaves her exposed to being hurt, however this also shows her to be brave as she takes the risk knowing full well of the possible consequences.

Paloma Faith - Picking Up The Pieces
Within the music video 'Picking Up The Pieces' the main theme is performance based, this is shown through the numerous amount of times Paloma is singing into the camera and expressing her emotions through facial expressions and body language. The artist also appears in the part narrative base of the video, which is a love story between herself and a male character. There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals through this love story, the song itself if about a woman who is under appreciated by her boyfriend because he is still in love with another woman. This is conveyed through the video by having the male character aggressive towards Paloma and very distant as he is thinking of someone else. This creates an association, which encourages viewers to remember the video whenever listening to song, this gives the song stronger recognition.
There is also a relationship between the music and visuals, as the editing is slow and in time with the beat of the song, this is used to avoid the music video from looking amateur or out of context. There are several close ups used of the artist and this is used in request from the record label, it allows the audience to become familiarised with the artist of the song as well as connect with them on a deeper level. The main emotions used within the closeups of this music video consist of anger, pain and frustration as she is not receiving the love and attention she desires because of the ex of her lover. The closeups highlight her feelings and make her relatable as the audience can cohere to the feelings themselves if they have been experienced.
The costume used is similar to the previous video, as Paloma is dressed in very vintage clothing with an old fashioned hat and very conservative, matching clothing making her look very antique and post modern. This is used to reach the more mature target audience, as they enjoy being transported into a past decade through watching it being recreated in media material. The setting also fits into this vintage representation as it is located in a massive ancient mansion in the country which is traditionally decorated. This emphasises the theme of being obsolete.
Paloma is represented as very naive within this music video as she is staying with a man who is not truly in love with her because of how infatuated she is with him, this is a stereotypical view society has on all woman as it shows them to be weak and narrow minded. Paloma is also conveyed to be fragile through the cinematography, as she is filmed using a high angle shot which is used to make her seem powerless and inferior.
