Research into chosen music artist - Miss Georgiou

Our chosen music artist is Paloma Faith, as a group we decided to choose Paloma because we feel that she represents the soul genre in a modern way. She has a edgy look which can relate and appeal to a wide audience, we feel that reinventing a music video from one of her song would be very adaptable as we could use her alternative nature to experiment with different shots and concepts.

Paloma Faith Blomfield (aged 33) originally from Hackney, London is a British singer-songwriter and actress, known for her unique, retro and eccentric style. She completed A-levels and then went on to do a degree in contemporary dance and a MA in theatre directing, she funded her studies through part time jobs such as; a sales assistant, a singer in a burlesque bar, a life model and a magicians assistant. Faith has received three BRIT Award nominations, including British Female Solo Artist and Best British Album, she has also featured within St Trinian'sThe Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Dread. Paloma Faith - Just Be
Within the music video 'Just Be' the majority of the editing is very slow and transitions between scenes and characters are gradual. The slow editing makes the music video more sensitive and personal, as it allows the audience to connect with the characters through having them on screen for longer and enhancing their emotions. This type of editing is also used to build a relationship between the music and visuals, it is in sync with the beat of the song, creating a more professional and conventional effect, which is explained within Goodwins theory.
Another point from Goodwins theory used within the music video is that there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, the lyrics 'Don't say nothing, just sit next to me' are repeated throughout the song and as it is sung the male character continuously sits down next to Paloma. This relationship between the lyrics and visuals as used to encourage viewers to create a association, so that they can remember the music video whenever they hear the lyrics in the song, this will create stronger recognition and in turn publicity.
There is also a voeyristic use of the female body within the music video, which is another point from Goodwins theory. Paloma is shown naked curled up into herself in clips throughout the video, this is used to attract the attention of the male audience who will view her as a sexual object, aswell as create a inspirational icon towards the female audience. Using Paloma in this way within the video successfully lures viewers into continuing watching the video, it automatically grabs attention as it is controversial. However within this video it also has a hidden meaning, as the use of her naked body is to percieve her as vulnerable and unprotected, her body language and posture show her to be weak. The music video is primarily narrative based, as there is a love story going on throughout the whole video, however Paloma is playing the woman within the love story and on several occasions sings into the path of the camera meaning there is a lot of performance base as well as narrative. These are used as they are very popular themes within music videos and they allow to audience to connect with the artist as well as being entertained.
Palomas costume is very vintage as she wears an old fashioned hat with a plain black dress and heels, this is used to create a antique look which will appeal to her target audience. The video is also in black and white which falls into this same point, the obsolete theme reaches out the the more mature fans, who can relate to the mimiced decade. There are many settings used throughout the video, however the main ones used include a bar, a bedroom and a sofa in which the characters are receiving counsilling. This is used to show how relationships develops over the years, from meeting each other to growing old. I believe these settings are used to allow the audience to relate to the relationship played out by the characters as they will go through the same or similar issues within their lives.
Paloma is represented as vulnerable in this video as she is shown to be in love which leaves her exposed to being hurt, however this also shows her to be brave as she takes the risk knowing full well of the possible consequences.

Paloma Faith - Picking Up The Pieces
Within the music video 'Picking Up The Pieces' the main theme is performance based, this is shown through the numerous amount of times Paloma is singing into the camera and expressing her emotions through facial expressions and body language. The artist also appears in the part narrative base of the video, which is a love story between herself and a male character. There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals through this love story, the song itself if about a woman who is under appreciated by her boyfriend because he is still in love with another woman. This is conveyed through the video by having the male character aggressive towards Paloma and very distant as he is thinking of someone else. This creates an association, which encourages viewers to remember the video whenever listening to song, this gives the song stronger recognition.
There is also a relationship between the music and visuals, as the editing is slow and in time with the beat of the song, this is used to avoid the music video from looking amateur or out of context. There are several close ups used of the artist and this is used in request from the record label, it allows the audience to become familiarised with the artist of the song as well as connect with them on a deeper level. The main emotions used within the closeups of this music video consist of anger, pain and frustration as she is not receiving the love and attention she desires because of the ex of her lover. The closeups highlight her feelings and make her relatable as the audience can cohere to the feelings themselves if they have been experienced.
The costume used is similar to the previous video, as Paloma is dressed in very vintage clothing with an old fashioned hat and very conservative, matching clothing making her look very antique and post modern. This is used to reach the more mature target audience, as they enjoy being transported into a past decade through watching it being recreated in media material. The setting also fits into this vintage representation as it is located in a massive ancient mansion in the country which is traditionally decorated. This emphasises the theme of being obsolete.
Paloma is represented as very naive within this music video as she is staying with a man who is not truly in love with her because of how infatuated she is with him, this is a stereotypical view society has on all woman as it shows them to be weak and narrow minded. Paloma is also conveyed to be fragile through the cinematography, as she is filmed using a high angle shot which is used to make her seem powerless and inferior.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of your chosen music artist. You have made a start in analysing some of the micro elements, but further analysis and examples of mise-en-scene and cinematography is needed to demonstrate further analysis.

You have also considered some examples, but further analysis of the codes and conventions of the artist is needed, to demonstrate further knowledge and understanding.

Aim to include a summary to explain how your research will assist you with planning and creating your own music video, by explaining what conventions you will include
