Research into chosen music genre - Miss Georgiou

The genre of the music video 'Only love can hurt like this' by Paloma Faith is soul, we chose this genre because we feel we will be able to recreate a music video of a song as we can portray a lot of emotion and feelings using a narrative concept. Soul songs have a strong deeper meaning behind the lyrics and we hope to take advantage of this when filming our music video, by using characters to portray the true meanings.

Amy Winehouse - You know i'm no good
Within this music video Amy Winehouse uses a lot of close ups for example when she is in the bath, this is very conventional for the soul genre because it focuses on highlighting the feelings of the artist. As the genre is soul, conventionally the lyrics are very deep and meaningful therefore the closeups successfully affect the viewers perception of the mood of the artist, which is normally quite depressing or emotional.
There are many settings used within the music video, there is a bar, bathroom, bedroom, and police office. These settings represent the artists lifestyle and also have a relationship with the lyrics, the concept of the song is that she is cheating on her boyfriend but she had warned him she was going to hurt him. The bar represents her excessive need to drink alcohol to stop the guilt, the bedroom represents how she is unfaithful to her boyfriend sexually, the bathroom represents how she cleans herself to try wash away her sins and the police office represents how she has been caught. These settings are conventional because they all embody the artists private life and retrospectively reflect the artists previous experiences.
The costume and make up of the artist is very vintage looking, this is a very conventional to the soul genre as commonly the theme is old fashioned and traditional. This is used to grasp the attention and appeal to the demands of the target audience, as they are older men and mainly women who are fond of an appreciate this style.
The editing between transitions used in this video is quite slow paced, this is because there is a relationship between the music and the visuals, as the song is quite slow paced the editing has to be in the same context.
Goodwins theory is used quite a lot within the video for example my previous point of there being a relationship between the music and visuals as well as a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. When Amy Winehouse is laying in the bed with a man, she is shown in a voyeuristic manor, as her breasts are positioned in the centre of the screen and the man is touching her in a sexual way. This is used to promote the artist by giving female viewers an inspirational role model and for the male viewers a sexual object to stare at.
This video is both narrative and performance based, this is because there is a story being told throughout the video as there are characters and plots in which the audience can connect with and be entertained by. However Amy is starred in the whole music video, whether she be acting as a character or singing in to the camera, this highlights her talent in the performing arts and music industry.

Adele - Cold Shoulder
Within this music video there is a lot of closeups used, and similar to the previous video, this is used to present to the audience the emotions of the artist so that the viewers can connect to them. This is conventional to the soul genre as soul songs represent the feelings and past experiences of the artists which can be portrayed through the facial expressions and body language that they show in the shots. The editing within this video is very unconventional for the soul genre as it is quite fast, even though it follows Goodwins theory of having a relationship with the music and visuals for this particular song, its still very uncommon within soul music videos as it distracts from the emotion of the lyrics.
The costume and makeup used within this music video are very simplistic and also vintage, which is similar to the previous video. Her hair is neatly tied up into an old fashioned bun to the side and her makeup consists of authentic eye liner, this appearance is used to help attract her target audience, which is younger adults with a very alternative and quirky look.
Adele is represented as very emotional and talented throughout this video as it is primarily performance based, therefore focuses on her vocal talent as she sings into the camera for the majority of the song. As the song is very deep and personal she has a connection with it, which is shown when she is singing into the camera. This portrays her to be very fragile and vulnerable, which is very conventional for soul artists as they stereotypically have a lot of pain and hurt inside them.
Goowdins theory is used within this music video through the closeups, which help promote the artist as the viewers will become familiar with her style and appearance. There is also a minute relationship between the lyrics and visuals as the lyrics 'Cold shoulder' are repeated throughout the song and there is several ice sculptures surrounding adele in the video. There is also a relationship between the visuals and music, when the song begins to pick up in speed the transitions between scenes become in sync with the beat.

  1. This post demonstrates some understanding of your chosen music genre. You have made a start in considering the mise-en-scene and artist representation, but points are needed on the other micro elements and codes and conventions. These points are needed to demonstrate further understanding.

You also need to include a summary, to explain how your research will assist you with planning and creating your own production.
